They had many funny jokes, which amused them greatly. Mini would seat herself before him, look down on his gigantic frame in all her tiny dignity, and with her face rippling with laughter would begin: "O Cabuliwallah! Cabuliwallah: What do you have in your bag?"
And he would reply, in the nasal accent of the mountaineer: "An elephant!" Not much cause for merriment, perhaps: but how they both enjoyed the fun! And for me, this child's talk with a grown-up man always had in it something strangely fascinating.
Then the Cabuliwallah, not to be late, would take his turn: "Well, little one, and when are you going to your father-in-law's house?"
Now nearly every small Bengali maiden had heard long ago about her father-in-law's house. But we were a little new-fangled, and had kept these things from our child, so that Mini at this question must have been a trifle bewildered. But she would not show it, and with ready tact replied: "Are you going there?"
Amongst men of the Cabuliwallah's class, however, it is well known that the words father-in-law's house have a double meaning. It is a euphemism for jail, the place where we are well cared for, at no expense to ourselves. In this sense would the sturdy peddler take my daughter's question. "Ah," he would say, shaking his fist at an invisible policeman. "I will thrash my father-in-law!" Hearing this, and picturing the poor discomfited relative, Mini would go off into peals of laughter in which her formidable friend would join.
These were autumn mornings, the very time of year when kings of old went forth to conquest. I without stirring from my little corner in Calcutta, would let my mind wander over the whole world. At the very name of another country, my heart would go out to it, and at the sight of a foreigner in the streets, I would fall to weaving a network of dreams—the mountains, the glens, and the forests of his distant land, with his cottage in their midst and the free and independent life, or far away wilds. Perhaps scenes of travel are conjured up before me and pass and re-pass in my imagination all the more vividly, because I lead an existence so like a vegetable that a call to travel would fall upon me like a thunder-bolt. In the presence of this Cabuliwallah, I was immediately transported to the foot of arid mountain peaks. I could see the string of camels bearing the merchandise, and the company of turbaned merchants, some carrying their queer old firearms, and some their spears, journeying downward towards the plains. I could see_. But at some such point Mini's mother would intervene, and implore me to "beware of that man."
Mini's mother is unfortunately very timid. Whenever she hears a noise in the street, or sees people coming towards the house, she always jumps to the conclusion that they are either thieves, or drunkards, or snakes, or tigers, or malaria, or cockroaches, or caterpillars. Even after all these years of experience, she is not able to overcome her terror. So she was full of doubts about the Cabuliwallah, and used to beg me to keep a watchful eye on him.
If I tried to laugh her fear gently away, she would turn round seriously and ask me solemn questions:
Were children never kidnapped?
Was it not true that there was slavery in Cabul?
Was it so very absurd that this big man should be able to carry off a tiny child?
I urged that, though not impossible, it was very improbable. But this was not enough, and her dread persisted. But as it was a very vague dread, it did not seem right to forbid the man the house, and the intimacy went on unchecked.
Once a year, in the middle of January, Rahman, the Cabuliwallah, used to return to his own country. As the time approached, he would be very busy, going from house to house collecting his debts. This year, however, he could always find time to come and see Mini. It might have seemed to a stranger that there was some conspiracy between the two. For when he could not come in the morning, he would appear in the evening.
Even to me it was a little startling now and then suddenly to surprise this tall, loose-garmented man laden with his bags. But when Mini ran in smiling, with her "O Cabuliwallah! Cabuliwallah" and the two friends, so far apart in age, subsided into their old laughter and their old jokes, I felt reassured.

These factors can be classified under personal attribute(curiosity, high motivation) , familial, social and national attribute (good family background, supporting teachers, complete freedom and financial independence) respectively.
- Personal attribute
In V.S. Ramachandran's experience we can find personal attribute like curiosity and high motivation. Curiosity not in the simple sense of the desire to learn something. But obsessively, passionately and almost pathologically curious, a curiosity that dominates one's life. And along with this a high motivation that doesn't waver and can keep up with this curiosity. His experiences tells us its necessary to have contradictory ideas as only simple and straight ideas cannot make a person curious.
This can be applicable in my path of career as well which is architecture. Much like the writers career path, Architecture consists mainly of practical and brainstorming aspect rather than theoretical ones. Although i am just in the first semester of this course, the workload has been unimaginably huge and the only thing that has kept me going is my curiosity towards the buildings which i had from childhood. The curious mind is the drive that keeps me from stumbling and giving up in my path to being a Architect. Curiosity has encouraged me to do more research on the subject matter and complete my projects. Similarly another factor is the high drive or motivation that has helped me to overcome some obstacles where curiosity has failed me.The late night works works which i have completed through many mistakes is all thanks to this high motivation.
But there is a limit to how much a person can accomplish on his own through the motivation and curiosity only if not for the supportive family, society and nation.
- Familial, social and national attribute
Another major factors that played a major role in the writers path to becoming a scientist are his good family background, supportive family and teachers, complete freedom and financial independence. The writer belonged to a well-off and educated family who always helped him to do his home experiments. Similarly, he also had supportive teachers and lecturers that encouraged him.
As a student of Kathamndu University, a private organization the tution fees are no joke.Without the backing of my supportive family i wouldn't have been able to enter this university. They have agreed to my career decisions and supported me in every aspect they could. Similarly, the teachers of Architecture department has helped me to deepen my knowledge regarding Architecture.Even after the end of university session they have helped me to suffice my curiosity. When i stumbled across a problem in my project they have helped me to overcome it.So, i can clearly say that i have both the support of my family and teachers in my career path which has helped to keep my curiosity alive.

Going to University helps transcends us human as a whole from ignorant beings to intelligent beings. The education we acquire helps remove darkness from the mind and fill us with knowledge. Besides this university provides us with many other perks which can make us a better person and achieve better quality of life as a whole. As everything has its own advantages and disadvantages so does going to university. But the advantages far outweighs the disadvantages.
Having a better understanding through education helps a person to make rational decision in every aspects of life while an uneducated person can make irrational decisions. And there are many instances in life where a moment of irrational decision can be fatal.Another thing which is usually looked down upon is the personal freedom education provides us with, shattering some of the invisible walls of our life.University provides us with a platform where we can expand our social horizon which can come handy in life.Moving on to a bigger platform, it has been found that democracy and education are closely related..Similarly, social economist believe the chief wealth of a nation is not its natural resources or land but the population of the educated residents. In the end,the worth of university all concerns with the income and job opportunities it provides which can be explained by the interrelation of education and income. These are the ground of arguments.
Attending university provides one which the education which he use to upgrade his social status as it can be seen educated people are respected in the society. It makes them rational in a sense. A rational person can solve conflicts in a logical manner compared to an uneducated one who may mostly use brute force. Educated person becomes concious of his/her health, the impact of various things on their health and as such have good health habits.Another thing that comes with education is self-satisfaction brought about by the confidence education brings. Better education also leads to better income and lifestyle. University provides a horizon to meet new people, provides opportunities and contributes to improve one self.It can also be noted.Democracy also functions well in countries with more educated people.
The warrant above is backed by the text "Why go to university" by Moti Nisaani. It has been proven statistically that better education leads to better income.Without university certain promotional opportunities as well as job opportunities are simply closed. From the experiences of German and Finnish it can be seen that is placed on a barren island , an educated people could in twenty years create a more prosperous country then those with greater natural resources. The people you meet in university can help widen your horizon as well as help you in different aspects of life.University knowledge makes a person more inclined to listen to other opinions/beliefs and respect them on equal grounds. As well as a country with more educated people obliges a politician to work in better way.
Some may argue that going to university puts more pressure on the person. It is the waste of time which only creates more expenses in life , the time which you could be spending earning money. But these are only views of these people from short term prospective. From a long term prospective the advantages heavily outweighs these things.Similarly people may argue about people who were university dropouts and are among world's richest now. These can only be applied to handful of people.Whereas majority of university graduates have good quality of life.
At the end it all comes down to the income and life the people who go to university and who dont't lead. Most people who go to university undoubtly have greater quality of life than those who don't. They have a stable job and lead happy life. So, we can say that going is university has far more advantages.
